Developing a growth mindset is essential in overcoming failures. This is something that we should all work on to be more resilient in life.

What many of us don’t realize is that they live their lives with a fixed mindset, which increases the limitations they have. This is the reason why those with a growth mindset tend to get ahead in life.

What Is A Growth Mindset?

Growth mindset refers to one’s belief that his or her abilities can be developed. Perhaps you would ask, “Aren’t some people smarter than others?” Well, the answer is yes and no. However, those with a growth mindset believe that they can always improve themselves. They know that they can catch up with or even surpass the abilities of people who are naturally born with these gifts.

How Does A Growth Mindset Affect One’s Ability to Handle Failure?

“The view you adopt for yourself profoundly affects the way you lead your life.” This is a notion that mindset expert Dr. Carol S. Dweck believe in. The Psychologist from Stanford University actually coined the term. According to her, a growth mindset is also closely tied to problem-solving. And one of the things we always have to deal with is failure. If you have a growth mindset, accepting that we all commit mistakes makes it easier to see failure as a motivation. On the other hand, those with a fixed mindset cannot take failure positively. They pity themselves and blame themselves for not being good enough. They excessively criticize themselves that a single failure tends to paralyze them. This is why one must learn to develop a growth mindset early in life.

“It’s failure that gives you the proper perspective on success. When you take risks, you learn that there will be times when you succeed and there will be times when you fail. Both are equally important.” – Ellen DeGeneres

Ways to Unlock A Growth Mindset

A growth mindset stems from our own powerful beliefs. Beliefs change over time when they no longer serve us any purpose. We also change our beliefs when they don’t help us achieve our goals. While people around us affect our beliefs and self-image, developing a growth mindset is still a personal journey. How do you develop this kind of positive mindset then? Check out some of the tips I have compiled for you below.

Tip #1: Make a new compelling belief

Illuminate the road to mastery by always creating a new compelling belief. Believe that you can hone your talents and skills. When you consistently enjoy what you do, you will always come up with new ways to do it. You only fail when you stop believing.

Tip #2: View failure from a different perspective

Failure shouldn’t destroy your dreams. In fact, you should see it as a challenge, as a motivation to do better. It is a perfect time for you to apply extra effort so you can improve your results. Look at it as a learning process instead of something that defines your abilities and worth. “I derive just as much happiness from the process as from the results. I don’t mind losing as long as I see improvement…If I lose, I just back to the track and work some more”. This is something inspirational from Olympic gold medalist and track and field athlete Jackie Joyner-Kersee.

Tip #3: Discover self-awareness

One of the most effective ways to develop a growth mindset is to become aware of yourself. Identify your talents and skills. Likewise, know your strengths and weaknesses. You can also seek feedback from your family, friends, colleagues, or superiors. When you do, make sure that you’re taking things constructively. Besides, their feedback will help you identify the key areas that you must develop. This will serve as your personal map to self-betterment.

Tip #4: Be curious to learn

Learning should not stop after graduation. Whatever degree you acquire, learning should be a lifelong process. Act like a child in a positive way. Do you notice their eagerness and curiosity to discover the beauty of life? This is an attitude that we all must adapt.

Ask questions and clarifications on things that you don’t fully understand. Be curious with every person you meet because you can always learn something new from everyone.

Tip #5:  Embrace challenges

Our journey in life is like climbing high mountains. We encounter obstacles along the path before we get to the top. We risk our lives as we go, meet people along the way, and set our mind to become indestructible. The climb surely won’t be easy. We will slip and falter, but what’s important is our willingness to get back up and continue. Hindrances are part of our daily lives. It is God’s way of polishing us just like diamonds have to go through cuts become more valuable. If you have to begin over again, do it. It doesn’t matter how long it takes you to get to the top. We all have our own timing anyway. Just enjoy your journey including the bumps and detours. Your growth mindset will take you to the zenith! The view and the feeling will be priceless if you won’t give up.

Tip #6: Love what you do

There is nothing more fulfilling than doing what you love. Every effort comes naturally. Rising to the top happens smoothly. Wouldn’t you do whatever it takes to reach your aspiration? It is our passion for what we do that continues to drive us despite the adversities.

Tip #7: Tenacity is the key

Tenacity is a very important ingredient of becoming unstoppable. It forms part of our being. It is being firm with our beliefs and dreams. Giving up is never an option for people with ignited tenacity. This is the thin line that separates amateurs from champions. Champions defy all odds. They never stop in the middle of a battle.

Tip #8: Get inspiration from others

How do you feel when you see others reach the heights of success? Do you feel inspired? This is actually one characteristic of an individual with a growth mindset. They don’t feel insecure when others around them are succeeding. In fact, they become empowered. Other people’s success stories further add more fuel to their blazing passion. It liberates their soul and helps them see unlimited possibilities for themselves. So, be wise with who you surround yourself with for you become exactly like them. Be friends with the dreamers, the risk-takers, the go-getters, the mentors…
